2ZEC: Smart Energy

Energy Data & System Integration
Designing the Zero Energy Cost & Zero Energy Carbon economy
Back To Home

Expert Alliance has developed the strategic architecture that enables 100% renewable generation, long duration energy storage, ultra-efficient housing, and energy-hungry AI compute to connect and combine on smart microgrids.

This page sets out the deep and broad experience in measuring, understanding and optimising energy and financial flows which form the bedrock of our expertise.

All of our IP in this field derives from physical demonstrator and proof of concept projects, and advanced digital models, in which we have ourselves directly invested.

A Foundation of Empirical Evidence

How to Electrify Your Life, Save Loads of Money & Save The Planet too.

How to Electrify Your Life

The bedrock of our smart energy expertise is not theoretical modelling, but many years of consistent, real-world data capture. Before defining and designing the architecture for community-scale microgrids, we proved the financial and physical realities of the Net Zero transition at the single-household level. This was demonstrated at the How To Electrify Your Life ‘living lab’ at Alan James’s home in Northern England.

We track every electron and every penny. Over a sustained period, this rigorous empirical approach demonstrated an annual net financial benefit in a typical year of £21,118.74. Measured against our capital investment of £145,981 in two EVs, solar, significant battery capacity and a heat pump to replace heating oil, motor fuel and ‘dumb grid’ electricity use, that’s an exceptional payback period of 6.91 years.

To appropriate a Clintonism to explain the economics: "it’s not the sunshine in the day time, stupid, it’s the grid surplus in the middle of the night." Both free-to-planet sunshine and ‘we’ll pay you to take it away’ grid surpluses are pure zero carbon electricity. Win-win: cash in the bank and electrons in the battery.

The Showcase

Warksburn Old Church.

Warksburn Old Church

Having established the foundations at domestic scale, we escalated our ambition with Alan’s investment of £1.36M to build Warksburn Old Church, to serve as the physical showcase for the Zero Energy Cost and Zero Energy Carbon (2ZEC) model, which is central to the commercial models we now structure and advise upon.

This award-winning 5-star property holds Passivhaus certification, Green Tourism Gold, VisitEngland Gold, and the highly rare and exclusive Airbnb Luxe status. As the world's only Passivhaus certified church-to-home conversion, Warksburn Old Church proves that our strategic vision works in physical reality. Guests can book a stay to experience first-hand a property that generates negative energy bills. Warksburn Old Church is so innovative and ground-breaking that it has attracted significant media attention, including 3 TV features and a major article in the Sunday Times.

A personal connection...

Warksburn Old Church has a fascinating historical backstory, which intertwines on multiple levels with our focus on both transport infrastructure and clean energy. Its original construction was funded by Sir George Barclay Bruce, the eminent railway Victorian engineer, who began his career apprenticed to none other than Robert Stephenson (of 'Rocket' fame).

Like Stephenson before him, Barclay Bruce went on to become President of the Institution of Civil Engineers. His Presidential Address, delivered on 8th November 1887, contains the world's first documented reference to the renewable generation and storage of electricity. Over a century later, our Passivhaus conversion of Sir George's building realised his vision, and itself created a world first in the process.

Proof in Commercial Operation (PICO)

Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal

The leap from domestic showcase to grid-scale infrastructure is bridged by our rigorous approach to data modelling. We applied this empirical intelligence to secure a £2.64M public funding offer to build the 2.2 MWh Proof In Commercial Operation (PICO) plant for a highly innovative, UK-developed long duration energy storage system which uses modular, scaleable Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) technology.

This required moving beyond historic tracking into advanced predictive modelling. We built an integrated mathematical architecture containing 17,520 half-hourly periods, overlaying a full calendar year of volatile wholesale electricity market data against exact wind and solar generation curves.

This model tracks the complex interplay between intermittent community-scale renewables, grid import costs, and the precise mechanical efficiencies of compressing and expanding air for energy storage. The PICO plant is scheduled to start construction in January 2027. So important is this technology, and so great are the benefits it could bring when deployed at scale, that we have ourselves invested two years in developing the project's immensely detailed HM Treasury 'Green Book' Business Case, acting entirely at risk.

The 2ZEC Master Vision & Proprietary Architecture

Our leadership in energy and financial modelling culminates in the master vision of the Zero Energy Cost & Zero Energy Carbon (2ZEC) development model. We do not just analyse the data; we structure the commercial and physical environments that bring these models to life.

Our 2ZEC development model unites ultra energy efficient homes, community-scale wind turbines, solar trackers, long-duration Compressed Air Energy Storage, and a Tier 3 Edge AI Data Centre into a single, highly profitable, closed-loop microgrid.

We optimise the physics and economics through thermal symbiosis: using data centre waste heat to improve storage efficiency, and storage byproduct cold air to cool the data centre. Every energy flow, thermal exchange, and financial transaction within this boundary is controlled and optimised by our architecture.

Mat Zero: Smart Energy for Extreme Environments

Mat Zero

The core principles of our smart energy architecture (capturing, storing, and deploying energy with extreme precision) are not limited to macro-infrastructure or luxury real estate.

We have a strategic involvement as founding investors in Mat Zero, the company founded by the brilliant humanitarian tech entrepreneur, Sri Hollema. Mat Zero applies precisely the same smart energy methodologies to the provision of life-critical heating in disaster relief deployments and refugee camps. By treating individual heating mats as localized energy distribution nodes, the technology delivers safe, revolutionary heating to environments where traditional power infrastructure is non-existent.

Smart Architecture Applied to Transport

Winslow Station

The principles of our smart energy architecture extend far beyond residential or commercial real estate; they are fundamentally applicable to multi-billion-pound national transport infrastructure.

Instead of viewing major infrastructure projects through a legacy, single-purpose lens (such as pouring concrete or stringing continuous copper wire), Expert Alliance approaches them as vast, interconnected energy ecosystems. By deploying strategically placed "Energy Islands" that integrate local renewable generation and Long Duration Energy Storage, we can drastically reduce capital expenditure while creating massive, high-margin commercial opportunities through grid-balancing and localized power distribution.

We proved this by architecting the "smart energy corridor" concept for East West Rail, redefining how the Oxford-Cambridge railway should be powered. This approach replaces continuous overhead electrification with intermittent charging nodes and Energy Storage-equipped Electric Multiple Units. This is a visionary proposal that has now been formally adopted as UK Government policy.
